Marie Hansen

Marie works closely with the property team, providing clients with relationship property and property sharing advice. She also assists commercial clients with their Anti-Money Laundering regulatory requirements and competition law issues. Marie is trusted by her clients to give clear, timely and realistic advice, taking time to understand each clients’ unique needs and concerns.

Marie began her legal career at Smith and Partners in 2006 as a family lawyer. She then gained significant experience at a large firm in construction and competition litigation. Returning to Smith and Partners in 2017, she has since developed her relationship property practice, and the firms’ Anti-Money Laundering Compliance Programme.

Marie is the chair of a Complaints Assessment Committee with the Real Estate Authority, considering and determining complaints against real estate agents. She also volunteers as a Law Society Standards Committee member, considering complaints against lawyers.

Marie also serves as an adjunct instructor at the College of Law, teaching in and developing content for the Family Law Masters (LLM) and teaching in a range of subjects for the Professional Legal Studies (“profs”) course.

Outside of work, Marie is in a choir that sings 90s rock, has performed in a community production with NZ Opera, and enjoys planning her family’s next overseas trip.
